The A-League, the highest level of football in Australia, kicked off this past weekend with expectation at an all time high. The season which is now in it's 8th year, has been called "the year to look out for" with an introduction of a new club, West Sydney Wanderers and the introduction of 3 important marquee players. Shinju Ono, Emile Heskey and Alessandro Del Piero have all signed contracts to stay and play their football in Australia this season. Friday night saw the local Melbourne derby take place, Melbourne Victory with new manager, former Roar coach and 2 time winner Ange Postecoglou taking the reigns facing Melbourne Heart. After a caging and opening affair with the score's level at 1-1, the Heart grabbed a 2-1 win to take the derby rights. Heart looked disciplined and well organized, pressing at the right opportunities which lead to positive attacking chances. Victory on the other hand looked shaky, and with expectations at an enormous level after last years failure's, results must appear in the near future.

Del Piero for Sydney |
Saturday night Sydney FC traveled to Wellington, with 2 million dollar man and Italian superstar Del Piero making his debut. This could be the biggest signing in Australian sport, with the player representing Juventus for 19 years, winning Serie A titles, Champions League and World Cup in 2006. Fairytails don't always go to plan with Wellington convincingly winning 2-0. Sydney looked all over the shop, too many mistakes and not enough service for the Italian. Elsewhere at Parramatta stadium, West Sydney made their debut holding Central Coast to a 0-0 draw, showing signs they are no stepping stone for other teams. A crowd of over 10,000 showed the game is indeed alive in the western part of Sydney, Ono played part in the last 30 minutes with a great presence. Heskey started for Newcastle but Adelaide took them down 2-0. Elsewhere Perth faced Brisbane in the grand final rematch, winning 1-0 at home to kick off their season in perfect fashion.
